Let's talk facts. There are many benefits to shopping locally and supporting your community, both here in CLE and globally! Here are some concrete benefits of shopping local:
Supporting your city economically:
Shopping locally has countless benefits for your community, especially in terms of investment and revitalisation. For one thing, buying local ensures that you’re supporting job growtth in your city, because local entrepreneurs and businesses use local services themselves for things such as maintenance, accounting, and retail! While major chains have corporate clients they use for these services, local businesses employ the folks they met down the street (or at a Keep It Local networking event ;).)
Similarly, local businesses buy a lot of their supplies from local providers! That means more money from shopping local gets invested back into your community to keep it thriving. According to a study we found on entrepreneur.com based in Chicago, every $100 spent locally keeps $68 in the city, while only $43 spent at a chain retailer stays local.
Supporting your environment:
Shopping locally, especially for food, has a positive impact on your surrounding community, but also on the world. A portion of green-house gasses, which contribute to global warming and other environmental problems, come from food-miles, or how far your food has to travel to get from its origin to your plate/grocery bag. Most food products are transported via truck or airplane (which produces more greenhouse gas emissions than any other motor vehicle!) sometimes over 1500 miles. Buying groceries from a major superstore significantly increases the likelihood that your food won’t be sourced from a local provider. However, there are countless Cleveland-based restaurants, cafes, and grocers who make it a point to source their ingredients from Ohio-based farmers and producers.
Buying from national chain suppliers who have transported their grocery goods farther to reach you also means that the foods will be packaged with nonrecyclable materials like styrofoam and plastic, which contribute to landfills.
Keeping your community unique:
We all know that when you buy local or use a local service, you’re not just marking another profit in the books for a national corporation — you’re supporting a local neighbor, helping their dreams to come true and making them very happy!
You’re also ensuring that there’s diversity of businesses in your community. As a local consumer, it’s your job to keep the hodge-podge of awesome, unique businesses that scream Cleveland by supporting these businesses and keeping them up and running. Cleveland’s heart and soul lie in Clevelanders themselves!
Finally, frequenting local stores will build lasting relationships between yourself and your community. Not only will this create better customer service for you, but it builds friendships and increases the number of friendly faces you see walking down your local street day to day.
