Spotlight: Keepin' it Fresh
Join us as we talk with Jeff Battershell, owner of Keepin’ it Fresh, about how he started his unique local business here in Cleveland, Ohio.
How did your business get its start?
We got started with one embroidery machine. At the time, we had a close relationship with a handful of Colorado breweries that agreed to pass along their logo and embroider it onto various types of apparel (hats, shirts, hoodies, etc.). Since then, we have expanded to several embroidery machines, screen printing, graphic design, and more. We now have well over 100 active clients in several different states and we are showing no signs of slowing down.
What makes your business so unique?
One thing that makes our business so unique is that we donate a portion of our time and sales to water conservation projects throughout the country. From the beginning, our largest client base has been breweries. Water is such a vital asset to the brewing industry, it just made sense to direct a portion of our time and sales towards clean water initiatives. Also, being so close to the Cuyahoga River and Lake Erie, it just makes such a natural decision for us to give back to these resources in any way that we can.
What do you like best about working in Cleveland?
I enjoy working in Cleveland because it is a pretty big city but still has a small community feel. We really have a tight-knit group of people all working together with the common goal of making Cleveland a great place to live, work, and thrive. Other cities seem so competitive, where people and business are competing against each other. Now I’m not saying that a little competition isn’t healthy, but Cleveland just seems like people are working with each other instead of against each other.
What do you like most about your job?
What I like most about my job is that it’s rarely ever the same routine. We have new logos and designs that come through every single day that all come with their own unique set of challenges. Some days I’m at the computer and on my phone, some days I’m running machines, and other days I’m out meeting with clients and running errands. It really is something different every day and that’s what I love most about my job.
How long have you been in business?
We started Keepin’ it Fresh in October of 2013. So we have officially been in business for 5 years this month. We have grown each and every year and cannot wait to see what the future holds.
Are there any details about your business that you want everyone to know?
For those of you who may not know, Keepin’ it Fresh embroiders and screen prints designs and logos onto clothing apparel. We are located in Peninsula which is in the heart of Cuyahoga Valley National Park right between Cleveland and Akron. We are a local small business, so if you call you’ll always speak to myself or whoever else is close to the phone at the moment. We take pride in our customer service, so please do not hesitate to call or email for some more information.
What does Keep it Local mean to you and your business?
Keep it Local means all sorts of things to me and my business. First off, keeping things local tend to keep your carbon footprint down and can also make things more cost-effective on both a personal level as well as a business. But the main thing that comes to mind when I think “Keep it Local” is a community. I think the best way to support the people and businesses within your community is to shop local. Not only as a business, but on a personal level as well The more you keep within your local community, the better off everyone will be.
