Spotlight: Shop the Trader
Join us as we talk with Abbey Markiewitz & Julia Gramenz, co-owners ofShop the Trader, about making important personal and professional connections with other creative small business owners through providing a valuable space and service.
What is your first memory of your company?
Getting the keys for our store front. We had so many things we were nervous and worried about, but also so much that we were excited and hopeful for. We didn’t know where to begin or how exactly it would all come together, but we were ready to work and turn our vision of a Pop Up Boutique into a reality.
How does your first memory compare to what the company has become today?
I remember thinking how in the world are we going to get this thing booked up (as I was preparing our first months calendar). It wasn’t anything new, we knew what we wanted to create, but still wasn’t sure how we’d get there. I look now at our calendar and love seeing all of the different pieces that make up Shop The Trader. It’s so much more than just Julia and I. Small business has truly come together to give life to Shop The Trader.
What has surprised you the most about being a business owner?
We both entered into this knowing it would be a lot of work. We had been running our clothing boutique out of my basement, and so, there was a lot of times we could get things done while spending time with our families. I think the shop has challenged us to create more of a work-life balance. We are both better partners, moms and wives when we have some down time. That said, being able to “turn it off” is something we continue to work at.
Who are some of the coolest people you've met since opening?
Good Golly, there’s so many! Due to the nature of our business, we meet so many amazingly creative folks. Seriously, it blows my mind! If I had to name a couple though, Sara Rockburn from 2 Odd Birds Jewelry and Lena Caldwell from Rebellious Beauty. Not only have these girls become good friends to us, but they are kick ass business owners, working moms and wives! They have created a brand they are passionate about all while working full time jobs! We love working with these girls and know it’s just the beginning for them.
What might we be surprised to learn about your business?
Probably that we aren’t just two moms that run a pop-up boutique. We also own our own women’s clothing boutique. We house it at Shop The Trader a few days a week.
How do you think your company will change in the next 5 years?
Well, my hope is that within five years we’ll have added at least one more location. We love our concept and think it would be a great fit in a few other neighborhoods.
What has been your main goal at this company?
Why did you choose Cleveland?
What has been the most satisfying thing about opening this business?
I think not just seeing our business grow, but seeing each other grow. We both have done a lot to get to this point and I think we’re capable of so much more than we know. We love seeing our hard work pay off.
