Spotlight: Small Spaces CLE
Join us while we talk with Carl Baldesare, the president of Small Spaces CLE. He’s sharing with us the story about how he started his truly unique local business here in Cleveland, Ohio.
How did your business get its start?
My wife and I were watching those tiny house shows a couple years back and she said, “you know you should build those because you like working with the high-end stuff”.
It was not uncommon for us to use the $9/sq. ft. tiles or wood that was imported for wood flooring or trim at my remodeling company.
The tiny houses were like “everyone wants the luxury in small packages” and that’s how we got started.
What does Keep It Local Cleveland mean to you and your business?
We try to source most of our materials and subcontractor labor from local companies. We’re still on the hunt for local manufacturers for certain items that we have to get from outside of Ohio but we will find them and soon we will be delivering a 100% local product.
What makes Small Spaces CLE unique?
The other summer we had the opportunity to go to the National Tiny House Jamboree in Colorado Springs and we got to meet about 60 different builders and saw some of their products.
What stood out to me was the level of quality and attention to detail that Small Spaces CLE has in really unparalleled compared to the rest of the marketplace. I was actually terrified that our pricing model would be too high but the reality was that our pricing is middle of the road but the quality is top notch.
How long have you been in business?
Small Spaces CLE started as a subsidiary as the remodeling company Specialty Renovations about 2 years ago. We have been in business four years this upcoming October.
What do you like most about your job?
It’s really cool to see what sort of things people want and to be able to create something from scratch and create a house that’s for them. A lot of people get new houses built but a lot of people don’t get full custom houses. The tiny houses allows them to have that full custom house.
What do you like best about working in Cleveland?
It’s Cleveland. The people are awesome!! Everyone kind of scratches each other’s back so we all look after each other from the business standpoint. It’s a pretty awesome town to do business in.
Are there any details about your company that you want everyone to know about?
All of our tiny houses are 99% recyclable. If for whatever reason, in 100 years, you decide you don’t want to live in it anymore, you can recycle almost the entire thing. We’re not creating waste and we build to the highest standard of quality. We don’t vary from that at all. Our standard build practices follow the international housing building code – we aren’t building RV’s, you know? We’re building homes that happen to be small and on wheels.
People often assume tiny houses are like RV’s but the reality of the situation is that they’re probably build better than most single family homes. I don’t mean that in a pompous way, I just mean that the practices and the materials are more cutting edge than what are used. We are doing things that are almost unheard of in the standard building industry because there is extensive engineering going on. We don’t only have to build these houses to last 100 years, we lost have to make them hurricane-proof and we have to build them so the load is balanced properly because they can move.
