Spotlight: Sweet Amelia's
Join us as we talk with Darlene Kozak, the owner of Sweet Amelia’s, about this truly unique local business here in Cleveland, Ohio.
How did your business get its start?
I have always wanted to own a bakery/sweet shop. Baking and making hand-dipped chocolates have been a joyful part of my life since my teen years. I was very close to my grandmother and my sister and I would bake biscotti with her growing up. After 30 years in the hotel industry in the areas of catering/food & beverage & sales & marketing, I decided to open Sweet Amelia’s in honor of my grandmother.
How long have you been in business?
We opened last November on weekends only and in July of this year expanded to being open 5 days a week.
What do you like most about your job?
What I love most about owning and operating a business is serving my customers and supporting the community. Nothing makes me happier than making people happy with a friendly visit and a sweet treat to enjoy themselves or share with others.
What do you like best about working in Cleveland?
I love the passion and perseverance of the people in Cleveland. The commitment to the city, area businesses, sports teams, and music is second to none.
What makes Sweet Amelia's unique?
Sweet Amelia’s is unique in that first and foremost, we honor the history of family and not forgetting what our grandparents did for us through sacrifice, amazing strength, and love of family. Our bakery is homemade and our are chocolates hand dipped…a step back in time, quality and caring service with our old fashioned sweet shop. We also have a gift station where customers can hand pick their container, sweets, ribbon and note card to make a unique, personal gift for family, friends, and coworkers…wrapped and ready within a few minutes.
What does Keep It Local mean to you and your business?
Keep It Local Cleveland supports and promotes local businesses which means everything to a startup local business. In a world where large businesses have so much power and exposure, it’s great to have an organization that encourages and helps promote local small businesses.
Are there any details about your business that you want everyone to know?
Yes, Sweet Amelia’s provides wholesale sweet products for your business, corporate client and employee gifts and desserts for local restaurants. We also host private events for women’s social events and children’s birthday parties. We will begin hosting candy making classes next month (November).
