Spotlight: The Dean Supply Company
Join us as we talk with Brant Desatnik of The Dean Supply Company about knowing customers on a first-name basis and helping home cooks feel like professional chefs.
How did your business get its start?
Sam, Lou, and Abe Desatnik opened up as a paper supplier and over the years we have expanded to sell almost everything used in a restaurant and bar with the exception of perishable food items.
How long have you been in business?
Since 1950, so for 66 years.
What do you like most about your job?
I like seeing and hearing from all the customers. It’s like talking to friends being here. You get to know most of the customers on a first name basis and build personal relationships, which in turn builds trust between Dean Supply and our customers.
What do you like best about working in Cleveland?
Cleveland has such a diverse selection of restaurants and bars. We really are a foodie town and we get to know and be part of that.
What makes Dean Supply unique?
We have a 20,000 sq. ft. showroom that is open to the public, so the home chefs can come in and buy restaurant-quality utensils and pots and pans, or buy the same flatware, china, and glassware that you see in your favorite restaurant or bar.
What does keep it local mean to you and your business?
We have built our business on helping local restaurants and bars and I have grown up trying to patronize all my local customers.
How did you come up with your business name?
The name comes from my grandfather and his two brothers before they started Dean Supply. They sold paper and were known as the Dean Brothers. So when they started this business they stuck with the name Dean and just added Supply to it.
Are there any details about your company that you want everyone to know about?
We are a family-owned and operated business that has never left the city.
