Spotlight: Wanderlust Jewelers
Join us as we talk with Wanderlust Jewelers about making people’s jewelry dreams come true on a personal and local level.
How did Wanderlust Jewelers get its start?
My wife and I worked together before we were married. We both had been making jewelry for a long time and started casually talking about opening a business together. We started our company just a few short weeks after getting married. It started small, out of our house and has now grown into a consultation and design space in the Cedar/Fairmount District.
How long have you been in business?
We have been designing and making custom jewelry together since 2011.
What do you like most about your job?
Every piece of jewelry has a history, whether it is about the person who owned it or the history of the piece itself. We see beautiful old mine-cut diamonds, or settings that have long gone out of style but can still be preserved in the redesign process. Sometimes it is the story of the person who used to wear the jewelry that makes the piece special too.
What do you like best about working in Cleveland?
The network and support of other small businesses helping each other succeed.
What makes Wanderlust Jewelers unique?
We work directly with our clients to build custom one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry. We not only do engagement rings and wedding bands, but also redesign and rebuild existing jewelry. We provide every client with a series of sketches to choose or draw inspiration from.
What does keep it local mean to you and your business?
Keeping it local is our way of building the community we live in. We are a neighborhood jeweler and build longstanding relationships and friendships with our clients and other small businesses. It goes beyond the jewelry and becomes about the people. We really cherish that aspect of our business.
How do you keep your creative juices flowing?
It’s easy when every piece is a new, custom project and design challenge. We have pages and pages of sketches we have drawn for our clients. They only choose one piece from the series and when I look at all those pages, I see the rings and necklaces that I would still love to make that are still just on paper.
What is the process for working with a client on a custom design?
We meet with every client in our consultation space. Review the parameters of the project, drink a whiskey if they would like, and begin the design process. We provide a series of usually six sketches for the client within a week. Once they have chosen a design, then fabrication takes about 4-6 weeks.
Can you accommodate those that are allergic to certain metals?
Is there a special service you are offering right now?
Forging your own wedding bands. We open up the studio for a couple to fabricate each other’s rings. We walk them through the steps but they actually solder, form, and finish the pieces themselves. It’s such a great time for all of us.
